Encaustic painting is a process that uses beeswax with damar resin and pigment.
It is melted and applied to a surface.
It was practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. Most of our knowledge comes from the Roman Historian Pliny the Elder who wrote, "Natural History" in the 1st century A.D.
The paintings presented have many layers of color and wax giving them sculptural depth and texture.
