Krempa's sculptures are created with beeswax encaustic paints that are heated then manipulated by scraping, rolling, carving and using the paint to build multiple layers and levels. These solid encaustic sculptures are mounted with steel rods that are bored into a rock base, or directly onto the rock.
This sculptural series,"Life on a Reef", are his vision of life on an ocean reef.
Encaustic painting which was practiced by the Greeks as far back as the 5th century B.C. is a process that uses beeswax, damar resin and pigment. The colors are vibrant and brilliant and will not deteriorate, yellow or darken. Encaustic paints are extremely durable, being made with beeswax and resin they are resist to moisture and mildew.
